Frequently Asked Questions About Re-Certification

1. What is the time frame for losing certification if an employee would choose not to take the re-certification classes?

  • If your certification has not expired, you may take the exam(s) required for recertification. Online self-paced review material is available and highly recommended prior to taking the recertification exam.
  • If your certification has expired, you must take the original course.

2. When do I need to recertify?

  • Your re-certification date will be based on the date of your highest level of certification. For example, for an individual with Level III certification, the expiration date would be based on the date of Level III certification, not the prerequisite class(es).
  • These dates listed below are subject to change.
    1. During the first year of phasing in the re-certification program (2023-2024 training season), registration will be limited to individuals with certification dates prior to 1999. These certifications will expire on December 31, 2024.
    2. During the second year of phasing in the re-certification program (2024-2025 training season), registration will be limited to individuals with certification dates between 2000 and 2006. These certifications will expire on December 31, 2025.
    3. During the third year of phasing in the re-certification program (2025-2026 training season), registration will be limited to individuals with certification dates between 2007 and 2012. These certifications will expire on December 31, 2026.
    4. During the fourth year of phasing in the re-certification program (2026-2027 training season), registration will be limited to individuals with certification dates between 2013 and 2018. These certifications will expire on December 31, 2027.
    5. During the fifth year of phasing in the re-certification program (2027-2028 training season), registration will be limited to individuals with certification dates between 2019 and 2023. These certifications will expire on December 31, 2028.

3. Can an employee re-certify at a lower level than their highest certification? For example, can they re-certify at an HMA II instead of current HMA III?

  • Yes, you can recertify at a lower level. Your certification deadline then would be based on that lower-level class. Keep in mind, that if that higher certificate expires and you wish to have that certification back, you will be required to retake the Certification course in its entirety not the recertification course.

4. What if an employee is currently involved in PCC and foregoes the HMA re-certification but later on decides they want HMA certification, would they have to re-take all of the classes or could they re-certify after losing their certification?

  • Once their window for recertification passes, they will be required to retake the full certification course.
