The Hot-Mix Asphalt QC/QA program started in 1991. It is not as complex as the Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) program because HMA is normally produced and placed by only the contractor whereas concrete mix is typically produced by a ready-mix producer and placed by the contractor.

These courses are designed to introduce proper procedures and techniques for testing asphalt and to give students working knowledge of HMA plant operations, mix proportioning, troubleshooting and basic lay-down operations needed for producing and placing of asphalt mixtures in the state of Illinois. The student will have a greater understanding of asphalt cement, mineral aggregate, the laboratory, all of the tests and other laboratory operations necessary to develop a successful mix design as defined by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
